SECP Highlights Need for Transparency and Tax Reforms in Real Estate Sector
ISLAMABAD: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has emphasized that the growth of regulated real estate investment trusts (REITs) in the country is contingent upon enhanced transparency and necessary tax reforms. During a recent meeting, SECP officials outlined the critical role these factors play in attracting both domestic and foreign investments.
In the meeting, SECP Chairman Aamir Khan stated, “Without a clear framework for transparency and a conducive tax environment, the potential of REITs to contribute to the economy remains untapped.” He highlighted that the current regulatory landscape poses challenges that deter investors from engaging in the real estate sector.
The implications of these discussions are significant for Pakistan’s economy, as a thriving REIT market could lead to increased capital inflow, job creation, and urban development. Experts believe that reforming tax policies and ensuring transparency could not only boost investor confidence but also enhance the overall stability of the real estate market.
Looking ahead, the SECP plans to hold further consultations with stakeholders, including real estate developers and financial institutions, to draft a comprehensive strategy aimed at reforming the sector. These discussions are expected to culminate in policy recommendations that will be presented to the government in the coming months.
