Senate Committee Demands Oil and Gas Profit Sharing Mechanism in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: A Senate committee has mandated the federal government to devise a mechanism for sharing profits from the country’s oil and gas resources with provincial governments within two weeks. This directive aims to ensure compliance with Article 172(3) of the Constitution, which stipulates that provinces should either receive half of the oil and gas fields or share in the profits generated from these resources.
The committee’s decision reflects growing concerns over equitable resource distribution among provinces. Senator Mohsin Aziz, who chairs the committee, emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in the allocation of these profits, stating, “It is imperative that provinces benefit from the natural resources located within their territories to promote local development and economic growth.”
This initiative could significantly impact the economic landscape of Pakistan, as provinces stand to gain substantial revenue from oil and gas profits, potentially leading to increased investment in infrastructure and public services. The move is also seen as a step towards addressing longstanding grievances regarding resource allocation and provincial autonomy.
In the coming weeks, the federal government is expected to hold discussions with provincial representatives to outline the proposed profit-sharing mechanism. The outcome of these negotiations will be crucial in determining how effectively the government can implement Article 172(3) and foster a more equitable distribution of resources across the nation.
