ISLAMABAD: The Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights expressed serious concerns on Tuesday regarding the delays in compensation for families of Pakistani seafarers affected by a hostage-taking incident off the coast of Somalia.

During the meeting chaired by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, officials were questioned about the prolonged delays in the crew’s release, the repatriation of a deceased seafarer’s body, medical treatment for injured crew members, and the financial assistance provided to the affected families. Director of the Shipping Wing, Arif Haroon, informed the committee that discussions are ongoing between the ship owner, the manning agency, and parties involved in protection and indemnity insurance regarding compensation payments.

Senator Quratul Ain Marri emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, seeking detailed information on the federal government’s assistance to the families of deceased seafarers. The committee’s inquiries highlight the urgent need for effective measures to support those impacted by such incidents, reflecting broader concerns about the welfare of Pakistani seafarers working in high-risk areas.

The committee plans to hold further discussions to ensure timely resolutions and to monitor the progress of compensation payments. As the situation develops, it remains critical for the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens, particularly those in vulnerable professions.
