Short-term Inflation Hits 11.32% in Late October Amid Rising Food Prices
ISLAMABAD: Short-term inflation in Pakistan surged to 11.32 percent year-on-year for the week ending October 29, primarily driven by escalating prices of perishable food items, as reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday.
The inflation index, which tracks the prices of 51 essential items across 50 markets in 17 cities, reflects the ongoing economic pressures faced by consumers. The data indicates that while 15 items saw price increases, 12 items experienced declines, and 24 items remained stable compared to the previous week.
This persistent double-digit inflation has raised concerns among citizens and policymakers alike, particularly as it correlates with ongoing hikes in petroleum and diesel prices. The rising cost of living is expected to impact consumer spending and overall economic growth, prompting calls for government intervention to stabilize prices.
Looking ahead, analysts anticipate further discussions among economic policymakers regarding measures to address inflationary pressures, particularly in the food sector. The government may need to consider subsidies or other support mechanisms to alleviate the burden on consumers.
