Sindh CM Inaugurates Haroonabad Treatment Plant to Tackle Water Scarcity

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah inaugurated the Haroonabad Treatment Plant-I (TP-1), marking a significant step in Karachi’s efforts to enhance water security and address the pressing issue of water scarcity. This facility, described as Pakistan’s first large-scale wastewater treatment and reuse project, aims to convert wastewater into a reusable resource for industrial purposes.

At the inauguration ceremony, attended by prominent figures including Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, CM Shah emphasized the project’s importance. He stated that the plant will supply 35 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water to industries, thereby freeing an equivalent amount of freshwater for domestic use in Karachi.

This initiative not only promises to alleviate the city’s water woes but also supports sustainable industrial development. By transforming wastewater into a valuable resource, the Haroonabad Treatment Plant is set to play a crucial role in promoting environmental sustainability and improving the quality of life for Karachi’s residents.

Looking ahead, the Sindh government plans to monitor the project’s implementation closely and explore further investments in water management technologies to ensure long-term water security for the region.
