Swiatek Advances to Wuhan Open Quarter-Finals with 150th WTA Victory

WUHAN: Iga Swiatek achieved a significant milestone on Thursday by advancing to the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open, defeating American lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger with a score of 6-1, 6-4. This victory marks Swiatek’s 150th win at the WTA 1000 level, solidifying her status as one of the top players in women’s tennis.

The six-time Grand Slam champion is now only the third player in history to reach 150 WTA 1000 wins within her first 50 main-draw appearances, joining the ranks of legends Martina Hingis and Serena Williams. “I just wanted to focus on adjusting and being brave, and in the end, I’m happy that I was,” said the seventh-seeded Swiatek, who is aiming for her 13th title at this prestigious level.

Swiatek’s performance in Wuhan is crucial as she seeks to enhance her chances of qualifying for the upcoming WTA Finals in Indian Wells next month. “For sure I feel like I am playing better than at the beginning of the season, so I’m ready to push, and I’m happy to be in the quarters for sure,” she added, reflecting on her improved form.

In the quarter-finals, Swiatek will face American Ann Li, who secured her spot by defeating Janice Tjen 6-1, 7-6(7/1). With many top seeds eliminated from the tournament, Swiatek remains one of only two top-10 players still competing, highlighting the unpredictable nature of this year’s draw.
