Taiwan Receives First F-16V Fighter Jets to Enhance Defense Against China
TAIPEI: Taiwan welcomed the arrival of its first two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets on Friday, part of a larger order of 66 aircraft placed in 2019. This delivery, which comes after several months of delays, aims to bolster Taiwan’s air defense capabilities amid increasing military pressure from China.
The jets landed at Taitung’s Chihhang Air Base after a journey that included stops in Hawaii and Guam. Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo addressed reporters shortly before the arrival, assuring that more F-16Vs are expected to follow soon, although he did not specify the timeline for future deliveries.
This acquisition is significant for Taiwan, which has expressed concerns over the reliability of U.S. support in the face of China’s growing military assertiveness. The United States, Taiwan’s primary arms supplier, approved an $8 billion sale of the F-16V jets in 2019, a move that underscores Washington’s commitment to Taiwan’s defense despite ongoing tensions in the region.
Looking ahead, Taiwan’s government is likely to continue advocating for timely delivery of military equipment to ensure its defense readiness. The arrival of these jets is a critical step in enhancing Taiwan’s air force capabilities, which are essential for maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait.
