Two Chinese Nationals Sentenced for Spying on US Military
LOS ANGELES: Two Chinese men, Liren Lai and Yuance Chen, were sentenced to 30 months in federal prison on Friday for attempting to recruit US military personnel to spy for Beijing. The men pleaded guilty to charges of acting under the direction of China’s Ministry of State Security.
The US Department of Justice revealed that Lai and Chen engaged in covert intelligence operations within the United States, which included facilitating cash payments for sensitive information regarding national security. They were also involved in gathering intelligence on US military personnel and installations, aiming to recruit assets from within the military ranks.
Roman Rozhavsky, assistant director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating, “Let this sentencing serve as a clear warning: If you attempt to jeopardize the safety and security of our service members, our citizens, or our nation, justice will find you.” This case underscores the ongoing concerns regarding espionage activities targeting the US.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the US remains vigilant against foreign espionage efforts. The FBI has indicated that it will enhance its counterintelligence measures to protect national security interests. Further investigations into similar activities are expected as authorities remain on high alert.
