UK Airbase Incident: Police Find Petrol, Not Explosives, After Scare

LONDON: A suspected bomb plot at the Royal Air Force Fairford base in southwest England has led to confusion as police confirmed that no explosives were found, only a “quantity of petrol” in vehicles seized nearby. The incident unfolded on Sunday when a local resident reported several vans acting suspiciously, prompting an evacuation of the nearby village and the declaration of a major incident.

National Counter Terrorism Policing head Laurence Taylor stated, “Those vehicles have been subject to extensive examination… and we can confirm that no improvised explosive devices were found. However, a quantity of petrol was recovered.” This revelation has raised questions about the nature of the threat and the actions taken by law enforcement.

The situation escalated when British media reported that a member of the group had alerted police about an hour before a local farmer notified officers after observing the suspicious activity. The incident has drawn attention to security protocols at military installations, particularly those used by the United States.

The five London-based Britons previously detained in connection with the incident were released on bail, adding to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the case.
