UK Government Urges Public to Stock Three Days’ Emergency Supplies

LONDON: The British government has advised citizens to maintain three days’ worth of emergency supplies at home, a precaution underscored by a recent PHP software glitch and a summer marked by extreme heat, drought, and wildfires. This guidance was issued on Friday as part of a broader initiative to enhance public preparedness.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized the need for a proactive approach to emergencies during a meeting focused on wildfire responses. He noted that past responses had often left the country ‘on the back foot.’ The government’s new ‘Be Ready’ campaign encourages households to stock bottled water and non-perishable food items, reflecting lessons learned from recent crises.

The PHP software glitch, which led to significant internet outages and millions of hacking attempts, has prompted governments and businesses globally to secure their systems. This incident highlights the critical importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding essential services and infrastructure.

In response to the ongoing wildfire threats, the government has announced a new wildfire response plan that includes deploying military aircraft. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting reiterated the urgency of addressing cyber incidents and their implications for national security.
