Ukraine’s Longest Truce in Kherson Set to Expire Amid Rising Tensions

Ukraine war truce

KYIV: The longest truce in the ongoing Ukraine war, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, is set to expire on Sunday evening, with neither side indicating plans for an extension. This ceasefire, limited to the Kherson region, began early Tuesday and allowed for a humanitarian mission to the Russian-occupied area of Oleshky.

During the truce, both Ukrainian and Russian forces reported no violations, marking what a Ukrainian lawmaker described as the ‘biggest de-escalation since 2022.’ Local residents, including gardener Volodymyr Omeltchenko, expressed relief, calling the ceasefire a ‘breath of fresh air’ and seizing the opportunity to prepare their gardens for winter.

However, concerns loom as a Ukrainian military officer warned that fighting could intensify once hostilities resume. Russian forces, stationed across the Dnipro river, have reportedly used the lull to bolster their troop presence and stockpile ammunition, raising fears of a more severe conflict.

As the ceasefire draws to a close, the international community watches closely for potential escalations. Analysts suggest that renewed fighting could have significant implications for the humanitarian situation in the region and the broader geopolitical landscape.
