UNDP Reports Pakistan’s Poverty Rate Exceeds That of India and Bangladesh

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has revealed that Pakistan’s poverty rate is currently higher than that of its South Asian neighbors, India and Bangladesh. This alarming statistic highlights the ongoing economic challenges facing the nation.

The UNDP’s latest report indicates that approximately 39.3% of Pakistan’s population lives below the national poverty line, compared to 28.9% in India and 24.3% in Bangladesh. Officials attribute this disparity to a combination of factors, including economic instability, inflation, and inadequate social safety nets. A spokesperson for the UNDP emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive policy reforms to address these issues.

This situation poses significant implications for Pakistan’s socio-economic landscape, as rising poverty levels can lead to increased social unrest and hinder economic growth. Experts warn that without immediate intervention, the gap between Pakistan and its regional counterparts may continue to widen, exacerbating existing inequalities and limiting opportunities for millions.

In response to these findings, government officials are expected to convene a series of meetings aimed at developing strategies to combat poverty. Stakeholders from various sectors, including civil society and international organizations, will be invited to contribute to discussions on effective solutions to uplift the impoverished segments of the population.
