Vietnamese Police Arrest 12 in Major Cat-Stealing Operation for Food

HO CHI MINH CITY: Vietnamese authorities have apprehended 12 men accused of orchestrating a cat-stealing ring that reportedly took nearly 2,700 cats from residential neighborhoods for slaughter. The arrests were made following a series of night raids, with police and state media confirming the operation on Monday.

During the investigation, law enforcement officials confiscated various tools used in the thefts, including fur removal machines, cat traps, and measuring scales. The suspects, who allegedly operated between 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM, admitted to stealing and trafficking the cats, which are often sold for meat at local restaurants.

While the consumption of dog and cat meat is legal in Vietnam, vendors must provide certificates verifying the animals’ origins. Reports indicate that stolen cats can fetch at least 70,000 dong (approximately $2.70) per kilogram, highlighting a troubling market for these pets.

Criminal proceedings against the suspects commenced on Sunday, although the exact date of their detention remains unclear. This incident raises significant concerns about animal welfare and the enforcement of regulations surrounding the consumption of pets in Vietnam.
