Violent Clash Erupts in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail Over Kitchen Closure

LAHORE: A violent clash broke out between two groups of prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail on October 1, 2026, following the closure of the prison kitchen. The altercation resulted in the death of one inmate and left four others injured.

According to Inspector General of Prisons Mian Salik Jalal, the confrontation was sparked by frustrations over food shortages after the kitchen was shut down. The deceased prisoner has not yet been publicly identified, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This incident raises serious concerns about prison conditions and the management of inmate welfare in Pakistan’s correctional facilities. The ongoing issues related to food supply and overcrowding in prisons have been a longstanding problem, prompting calls for reform from human rights advocates.

In response to the violence, prison officials have initiated an inquiry into the incident and are expected to implement measures aimed at preventing future conflicts. The Punjab government is also under pressure to address the systemic issues within the prison system.
