World Bank Rates KP Hydropower Project Progress as Moderately Unsatisfactory
ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has assessed the progress of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hydropower and Renewable Energy Development project as “moderately unsatisfactory,” indicating substantial risks associated with its $727 million loan aimed at enhancing provincial institutions and boosting renewable energy generation.
In a public disclosure released on Wednesday, the Washington-based financial institution highlighted that while the overall implementation progress is rated as “moderately satisfactory,” the risk rating remains substantial. The project, which received approval in 2020, is scheduled for completion by November 30, 2027, but concerns over its development objectives have emerged.
This rating raises significant implications for the province’s energy landscape and its commitment to renewable energy initiatives. The project is crucial for addressing energy shortages in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals of increasing sustainable energy sources. However, the World Bank’s concerns may hinder future investments and support.
Looking ahead, stakeholders are expected to engage in discussions to address the identified risks and improve project outcomes. The World Bank’s ongoing monitoring will be vital in ensuring that the project meets its objectives and contributes effectively to the region’s energy needs.
