Yemen Forces Target Houthi Positions Amid Renewed Civil Conflict
YEMEN: Yemen’s government forces announced on Sunday that they have conducted strikes against Houthi targets across multiple regions of the country, intensifying the ongoing conflict that has plagued one of the world’s poorest nations.
The military operations, confirmed by Colonel Majid al-Nuzaili, targeted key Houthi strongholds in the capital Sanaa, the northwestern governorate of Saada, and the southwestern city of Taiz. This escalation comes as Yemen finds itself embroiled in a civil war once again, following a period of relative calm that lasted several years.
The resurgence of hostilities began in July, pitting the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who control significant portions of northwest Yemen including Sanaa, against the internationally recognized government supported by Saudi Arabia. The renewed fighting raises concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where millions are already suffering from food insecurity and lack of basic services.
As the conflict deepens, international observers are calling for renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis. The United Nations has previously attempted to mediate peace talks, but with the latest military actions, the prospects for dialogue appear increasingly bleak. Analysts suggest that without significant intervention, the situation could deteriorate further, exacerbating the humanitarian disaster.
