ISLAMABAD: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) announced on Tuesday that negotiations with the government regarding the abolition of the petroleum levy have made significant progress, although the government remains reluctant to relinquish certain privileges. The discussions appear to be nearing a conclusion as both parties work towards a resolution.

During a news conference following a meeting with government representatives, acting party emir Liaquat Baloch revealed that four critical points were addressed in the latest round of talks. He highlighted that JI had proposed six measures aimed at alleviating the financial burden on citizens, including the elimination of the petroleum levy, the introduction of a relief package, and reductions in public transport fares.

Baloch stated, “Both sides have acknowledged that abolishing the petroleum levy is essential,” adding that the government has also agreed to extend relief to the agricultural sector and to vehicle owners with engine capacities of up to 1,000cc. This acknowledgment marks a pivotal step towards addressing the economic challenges faced by many citizens.

Looking ahead, both negotiating teams are set to draft working papers detailing the gradual elimination of the levy and the implementation of relief measures for the public. The government is expected to finalize its working paper soon, paving the way for further discussions and potential agreements.
