FIA Detains Two in Karachi for Alleged Rs2.5 Million Hawala Operations
KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested two individuals in Karachi for allegedly conducting illegal hawala-hundi transactions, recovering Rs2.5 million in cash during the operation. The arrests were made near the Glass Tower at Jama Cloth Market on MA Jinnah Road, following a targeted raid on Wednesday.
According to an FIA spokesperson, the operation was executed based on intelligence reports regarding the illegal money transfer activities in the area. The spokesperson emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating financial crimes and ensuring compliance with the country’s financial regulations.
This crackdown on hawala operations is part of a broader strategy to curb informal money transfer systems that bypass official banking channels, which can facilitate money laundering and other illicit activities. The FIA’s actions underscore the increasing scrutiny on financial transactions in Pakistan, particularly in urban centers like Karachi.
Moving forward, the FIA plans to expand its investigations into other potential hawala networks operating within the city. Authorities are also expected to collaborate with financial institutions to enhance monitoring and reporting mechanisms to prevent such illegal activities in the future.
