Government Maintains Petroleum Levy Despite JI’s Calls for Abolition

Petroleum Levy

ISLAMABAD: The government has firmly rejected Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) demand to abolish the petroleum levy, even as it has agreed to provide fuel cost relief to the agriculture sector, public transport, and selected vehicle categories. This decision was communicated by acting JI Emir Liaquat Baloch following discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday.

Baloch expressed disappointment over the government’s stance, emphasizing that the petroleum levy continues to burden citizens and the agricultural community. He stated, “While we appreciate the relief for specific sectors, the overall economic strain on the public remains unaddressed with the persistence of the petroleum levy.”

The refusal to eliminate the levy raises concerns about its impact on inflation and the cost of living for ordinary citizens. Analysts suggest that maintaining the levy could exacerbate economic challenges, particularly for low-income households already grappling with rising fuel prices.

Looking ahead, JI plans to intensify its campaign against the petroleum levy, with further negotiations expected in the coming weeks. The party aims to rally public support and pressure the government to reconsider its position on this contentious issue.
