Punjab EPA Identifies 593 Fire Hotspots Amid Anti-Smoke Campaign

Punjab EPA fire hotspots

LAHORE: The Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has reported the identification of 593 agricultural fire incidents across eight districts, with 581 of these fires successfully extinguished as part of its intensified anti-smog campaign.

Utilizing satellite monitoring and field surveillance, the EPA detected these incidents in Hafizabad, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Kasur, Sialkot, Sargodha, and Gujranwala. The agency has enhanced its monitoring capabilities through the Punjab Climate Watch Hub, which continuously analyzes satellite-generated fire anomalies and sends verified alerts to local field teams for immediate action.

This operation is bolstered by Quick Response Units equipped with tractor-mounted fire bowsers and firefighting gear, enabling rapid response to reported fires. EPA Director General Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh has conducted surprise inspections to evaluate the effectiveness of field teams and surveillance along major motorways and the Grand Trunk (GT) roads.

Moving forward, the EPA plans to maintain its rigorous monitoring and response efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of crop-residue burning, which poses significant health risks and contributes to air pollution in the region.
