LPG Prices Surge to Double Official Rate Amid Ongoing Supply Shortage
KARACHI: The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has soared to nearly double the official rate in the open market, exacerbating the ongoing supply shortage that has left many consumers struggling to afford this essential fuel. As of this week, the market price for LPG has reached approximately PKR 300 per kilogram, while the government-set price remains at PKR 150.
Industry experts attribute this sharp increase to a combination of factors, including rising international prices, logistical challenges, and a lack of effective government intervention. A spokesperson from the LPG Association of Pakistan stated, “The current situation is unsustainable for both suppliers and consumers, and immediate action is required to stabilize prices and ensure adequate supply.”
This dramatic price hike poses significant implications for households and businesses alike, particularly as winter approaches and demand for heating fuel typically rises. Many families are now forced to seek alternative, often more expensive, energy sources, further straining their budgets amid an already challenging economic landscape marked by high inflation.
In response to the crisis, government officials are expected to convene next week to discuss potential measures to address the LPG shortage and stabilize prices. Stakeholders are urging the government to consider subsidies or price controls to alleviate the burden on consumers and ensure a steady supply of LPG in the market.
