Pakistan Stock Exchange Declines 3,560 Points Amid October Turmoil
KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) concluded October on a negative note, with the benchmark KSE-100 index plummeting by 3,560 points, or 2.1%, to settle at 166,409 points. This decline is attributed to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and domestic political instability, particularly following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has further eroded investor confidence amidst economic uncertainty.
According to Arif Habib Ltd (AHL), the market’s downturn was exacerbated by foreign portfolio outflows, profit-taking in major stocks, and a cautious investor sentiment influenced by volatility in global financial markets. Topline Securities Ltd highlighted that these factors collectively contributed to the significant drop in the index throughout the month.
Despite the overall decline, the market showed signs of recovery towards the end of October, buoyed by renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the US-Iran conflict and better-than-expected corporate earnings reports. AKD Securities Ltd noted that the KSE-100 index gained 4,034 points, or 2.5%, during the last week of the month, with average daily trading volumes surging by 121%.
Looking ahead, investors are keenly observing the evolving geopolitical landscape and its potential impact on local markets. Analysts anticipate that continued diplomatic engagements and corporate performance will play crucial roles in shaping market sentiment in the coming weeks.
