Retired Officials Urge Respect for People’s Wishes Amid Political Crisis
ISLAMABAD: A coalition of retired civil servants, diplomats, and military generals has issued a strong call for the equal treatment of all provinces in Pakistan, warning that any constitutional amendments imposed against the will of the people could jeopardize the nation’s unity and future amidst a growing political and economic crisis.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Roedad Khan Club, often referred to as Islamabad’s ‘retired establishment’, emphasized the urgent need to restore constitutional rule as a genuine practice rather than a mere facade. The statement was endorsed by notable figures including former Air Chief Marshal Abbas Khattak, ex-bureaucrat Shakil Durrani, and diplomats Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, Humayun Qazi, and Asif Durrani.
The retired officials highlighted that the military must return to its primary mission of safeguarding the country, adhering to its oath of allegiance, and honoring the vision of Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. They expressed concern that the current political landscape, marked by instability and economic challenges, requires a collective commitment to uphold democratic principles and respect the populace’s desires.
Looking ahead, the Roedad Khan Club’s statement may prompt discussions among political leaders and stakeholders about the future of governance in Pakistan. As the country grapples with pressing issues, including inflation and political unrest, the call for unity and respect for the people’s voice could shape upcoming dialogues and decisions.
