ECP Launches Voter Registration Initiative in Punjab and Sindh Districts
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced a pilot project aimed at reducing the gender gap in voter registration in the districts of Kasur, Punjab, and Qamber-Shahdadkot, Sindh. This initiative is set to commence data collection in November 2026, with voter registration activities scheduled to run from December 2026 to February 2027.
The ECP’s initiative focuses on identifying women eligible for Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) and facilitating their voter registration. Local social workers and enumerators will conduct door-to-door visits to compile statistical block-wise lists and promote awareness about the registration process. Additionally, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will deploy Mobile Registration Vans (MRVs) to assist women at their doorsteps, alongside registration centres established in government buildings.
This campaign aims to register approximately 115,689 women in Kasur and 59,156 in Qamber-Shahdadkot, prioritizing areas with a significant gender gap in voter registration. By empowering women to participate in the electoral process, the ECP seeks to enhance democratic engagement and representation.
Looking ahead, the ECP plans to monitor the progress of this initiative closely, with expectations of expanding similar efforts to other districts in the future. The success of this pilot project could pave the way for broader reforms aimed at increasing voter registration among women across Pakistan.
