PTI Urges ECP to Extend Deadline for Islamabad Local Elections Nominations

Islamabad local elections

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Islamabad chapter has formally requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to extend the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the upcoming local government elections in the capital by at least ten days. This appeal comes as candidates faced significant obstacles in obtaining the necessary paperwork.

Amir Mughal, president of PTI Islamabad and a core committee member, expressed frustration in an interview with Dawn, stating that candidates were unable to secure nomination papers on the designated day. He alleged that no staff were present at the offices of returning officers, and candidates were informed by watchmen at various schools and offices that the nomination papers would only be available on the following Monday.

Mughal emphasized the need for an extension, arguing that candidates require adequate time to obtain, complete, and submit their nomination forms. He raised concerns about the integrity of the local elections, suggesting that the government and the ECP might be attempting to delay or avoid the polls for the fifth consecutive time. His criticism extended to the legal framework governing the elections, which he deemed inadequate.

As the situation unfolds, the ECP’s response to PTI’s request will be closely monitored. The local government elections are critical for political representation in Islamabad, and any further delays could have significant implications for the electoral process and public trust in the democratic system.
