LHC Urged to Mandate Immediate Local Government Elections in Punjab

Local Government Elections Punjab

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has been petitioned to order the immediate conduct of local government elections across Punjab, emphasizing that these elections are a constitutional obligation rather than a discretionary action by the government.

In a miscellaneous application submitted as part of an ongoing writ petition, the Judicial Activism Panel (JAP) contends that the transfer of local government powers and assets to unelected bodies and private companies must be halted. Advocate Azhar Siddique, representing the panel, argues that denying the people of Punjab their elected local representatives infringes upon their constitutional and democratic rights.

The application highlights that Article 140-A of the Constitution mandates the establishment of local government institutions and the devolution of powers to them as a fundamental responsibility of provincial governments. It further asserts that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) cannot sidestep its constitutional duty to conduct local elections by citing delays in legislative or administrative processes.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications of this case could significantly impact governance in Punjab, potentially restoring local representation and accountability. The JAP’s concerns about the delegation of local government functions to private entities raise questions about the future of democratic governance in the province. The court’s decision on this matter is anticipated to set a precedent for local governance across Pakistan.
