Binance Resumes Withdrawals After Recovering $6.3 Billion in Stolen Tokens
GLOBAL: Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, announced it will resume withdrawals on Sunday after successfully recovering 95 percent of the $6.3 billion in tokens stolen during a significant security breach linked to North Korean hackers, according to the FBI.
The exchange, originally founded in China, stated that the first phase of withdrawals will commence between 0600 and 0900 GMT, covering 15 different cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, and Dogecoin. Binance confirmed that it utilized company funds to replace approximately $6 billion worth of the stolen assets, while the remaining 5 percent consists of less liquid tokens that may take longer to source.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges within the cryptocurrency sector, which has seen a surge in thefts, with attackers stealing nearly $2.9 billion worth of digital assets last year alone. The FBI’s connection of the breach to North Korea raises concerns about the security of digital currencies and the potential for state-sponsored cybercrime.
As Binance moves forward, the exchange is expected to enhance its security measures and collaborate with law enforcement to address the implications of this breach. Investors and users are advised to stay informed about the developments as the situation unfolds.
