Fertiliser Shortages Disrupt Sowing Season in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
ISLAMABAD: Chashma Sugar Mills has raised concerns with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi over critical fertiliser shortages affecting the region’s autumn sowing season. The mill’s Senior Director, Iskander Khan, highlighted that restrictions imposed by the fertiliser industry, under a directive from the Ministry of Interior, have severely limited the dispatch of supplies to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Khan emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the timing of these restrictions coincides with the vital Rabi sowing period, where fertiliser is crucial for the growth and productivity of key crops. He warned that any delays in fertiliser availability could lead to diminished crop yields, increased financial strain on farmers, and heightened food insecurity across the province.
The implications of these restrictions extend beyond agriculture, as they threaten the supply chain for sugarcane to local sugar mills. Authorities have justified the curbs by citing concerns that certain fertiliser types could be misused in the production of explosives, raising fears of potential terrorist access to these materials.
Looking ahead, stakeholders are urging immediate dialogue with government officials to address the fertiliser supply crisis and mitigate its impact on the agricultural sector. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are anticipated as the sowing season progresses.
